Biology

Biology is studied by all students to GCSE level and will be available at A Level from September 2017.

Biology starts as a discrete subject in Year 9. Most of the Key Stage 3 syllabus for biology is covered in Years 7 and 8, allowing us both to go beyond the National Curriculum and to start the GCSE content in Year 9.

Pupils are prepared for the AQA iGCSE Biology specification. This specification contains a broad range of biological topics that are designed to engage and stimulate students’ interest in biology whilst providing the knowledge and understanding required for progression to A Level. The specification emphasises scientific knowledge, the application of science and the scientific process.

Topics include:

• Cell Activity and Structure
• Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems
• Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Enzymes
• Human Biology
• Defending Ourselves Against Infectious Disease
• Plants as Organisms
• Variation and Inheritance
• Adaptation and Interdependence
• Evolution
• Energy and Biomass in Food Chains
• Decay and the Carbon Cycle

Biology is an enquiry-based discipline involving practical and investigational skills and consequently at The Cedars there is an emphasis on hands-on experimental work in our well equipped laboratory.

We also have our own Science Enhancement Programme at the school and we take part in a wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) events organised in London and beyond.
