Physics

Physics is studied by all pupils to GCSE. A Level Physics will be introduced from 2017.

Physics starts as a discrete subject in Year 9. Most of the Key Stage 3 syllabus for physics is covered in Years 7 and 8, allowing us both to go beyond the National Curriculum and to start the GCSE content in Year 9.

Pupils are prepared for the AQA iGCSE Physics specification. This specification contains a broad range of physics topics that are designed to engage and stimulate students’ interest in physics whilst providing the knowledge and understanding required for progression to A Level. The specification emphasises scientific knowledge, the application of science and the scientific process.

Topics include:

• Forces, Energy and their Effects
• Waves (Electromagnetic Spectrum including Light and Sound)
• Heating Processes
• Electricity
• Motors, Generators and Transformers
• Nuclear Physics
Physics is an enquiry-based discipline involving practical and investigational skills and consequently at the Cedars there is an emphasis on hands-on experimental work in our well equipped laboratory.

We also have our own Science Enhancement programme at the school and we take part in a wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) events organised in London and beyond.
