Cricket season is in full swing at Cedars, and our team’s spirit remains high despite the rain. We believe sport is essential for shaping a young man’s character, teaching virtues like fortitude, determination, courage, loyalty, and humility. Sports help our students make smart decisions under pressure and adapt to change, while also promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. Playing sports returns boys to class energized and ready to excel academically. At The Cedars we take pride in seeing our students grow both on and off the field, embodying the values that will serve them for life .

The special number pi (π) is a world-famous mathematical constant. Pi, approximately equal to 3.14159..., was originally defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Many other remarkable properties are assigned to pi that have long fascinated people the world over, including being an irrational number (infinite digits and non-repeating). This number is both useful and beautiful, and the search for patterns within the digits of pi can be highly satisfying and occasionally frustrating! In today’s workshop students from Yr7 at The Cedars and The Laurels investigated pi and its relationship with circles, putting the original definition of pi to the test.

Last night’s Young Musician of the Year competition finalists’ concert was a great success with many excellent performances showcased by our talented musicians. There were many notable performances during the evening and the overall winner was David Linton Ford in the 5th form who presented two performances during the evening – his own composition ‘Sosia’ and Tarantella by Pieczonka. Our adjudicator, Mr Matthew Gibson, noted that David had ‘exceptional handling of the piano’ and produced a ‘superb performance with an assured sense of style’.

On Wednesday lunchtime the boys from the Geography club put their homemade volcanoes to the test.
The line up included several papier mâché creations and a delicious cake!
The eruption experiment with baking soda and vinegar was conducted under the watchful eyes of the equally excited Mrs. Corpas, who was desperately trying to explain the theory whilst Mr. Johnston shouted, "MORE VINEGAR!".
Filippo's excellent volcano cake was thoroughly enjoyed by all the club members.

The 2nd Form boys performed the 'Food as Fuel' practical. By lighting the crisp using the Bunsen burner, the boys were able to transfer the chemical energy in the crisp to thermal energy in the water within the boiling tube. The bigger the change in temperature, the higher the energy content in the crisp! Walkers Sea Salt contained the most energy.

The tutorial system at The Cedars is an individual means of education that personalises the mission of the School. Every student is assigned a tutor who facilitates his full development as a young man. The tutor seeks to assist parents in the intellectual, moral, physical, and spiritual education of their sons. This formation takes place during tutorials ─one-on-one conversations between the tutor and tutee─ and in the ongoing dialogue between the parents of the tutee and his tutor.

Congratulations to all of our GCSE pupils this year! We are immensely proud of their achievements and wish them well in their future studies. This cohort has done exceptionally well to overcome the challenges which Covid brought to their secondary education. Overall, 52% of grades were at 7 and above.
Activities week: The Year 3s and Year 2s had great fun this week at their survival skills workshops run on the school grounds by the London Bushcraft Company. The boys were tasked with lighting fires, scavenging, purifying water, learning how to navigate by creating their own compasses and building shelters. Much hilarity accompanied the activities, while a highlight was munching delicious s’mores melted over the campfire. Somewhat less appetising was the bushtucker trial we finished each day with, although I must say I was impressed with how many boys were willing to eat roasted bugs including crickets and mealworms! It was wonderful to be able to so thoroughly explore and utilise the school grounds so I hope we can run some more workshops again next summer. #bushcraft #outdoorlearning #activities
Activities week at The Cedars: The day started with an interactive presentation exploring the BLOODHOUND LSR story and highlighting the key science and technology involved in designing and building a 1,000mph car. The pupils looked behind the scenes in building BLOODHOUND and key components including the jet engine, hybrid rocket and 3D printing technology. Pupils were introduced to the Hakskeen Pan where BLOODHOUND has undertaken high speed testing. The presentation allowed students to see how STEM is a theme running through all the technology we use, activities we do and the job opportunities available. #science #technology #engineering #STEM #handsonlearning

Someone once said: «I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.» We should always have our priorities right. St John Fisher and St Thomas More, whose feast day we will celebrate tomorrow, are good examples of this.

Forget Shakespeare in the Park, the boys in 7A enjoyed the Bard in the Garden last week. We used Freeze-Frames - a fairly standard pedagogical tool used everywhere from primary school right through to RADA - to capture dramatic moments from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
